Movies and Slide Shows

Introduction

This got started when Johanna took a class which included assignments to produce several one-minute QuickTime movies. We installed the first one on Mike's computer and placed a shortcut to it on his Desktop. He thoroughly enjoyed playing the movie forward, backwards, stopping it, restarting it, etc. For the next assignment, Mike was in it and soon it was on his computer's Desktop, too.

We have continued to make movies. Now we use digital pictures. It is fun and doesn't take much time. Mike enjoys watching them and showing them to others.

Converting digital pictures into QuickTime movies

We use iPhoto on a Mac to prepare the computerized slide show of digital pictures with music. The pictures are selected and timed in iPhoto and then exported as QuickTime movies.

The file is transferred to Mike's computer. A shortcut is created on his desktop and one of the digital pictures in the slide show is saved in .ico format, as explained below and assigned to the shortcut.

Identifying the movies

To identify a movie, a frame from a movie or a digital picture from a slide show is converted to an icon, as .ico format (approximately 32 x 32 pixels). IrfanView is used. On the Desktop a shortcut is created to startup the movie and the icon image is assigned by doing the following:

    1. On the Desktop right mouse click the QuickTime movie shortcut
    2. Select Properties
    3. Click the Change Icon button
    4. Click the Browse button
    5. Go to where you saved the ico image. Select it. Click Open.
    6. Click OK twice
